City of Canal Winchester issued the following announcement on April 7.
The City of Canal Winchester and Canal Winchester Local Schools will come together Thursday, April 28th to celebrate Arbor Day at Indian Trail Elementary, 6767 Gender Rd. Students will plant a tree on the school grounds and learn about the history of Arbor Day, celebrated annually on the last Friday of April.
The planting will be split into two sessions, 10:15 AM and 2:30 PM, to include as many students as possible. Canal Winchester Mayor Michael Ebert and Public Service Director Matt Peoples will present an Arbor Day Proclamation following the commemorative tree planting. Representatives from Ohio Nature Education will also be in attendance. As long as there are no severe weather warnings, Arbor Day activities will proceed rain or shine.
“We want to help teach everyone about the importance of tree canopy coverage. Trees create shade and cool temperatures, which is very important in urban areas,” said Dick Miller, Canal Winchester’s Urban Forester.
The City coordinates Arbor Day events through the Street Tree Advisory Board, a five-member panel of Canal Winchester residents who have worked to preserve, protect, and enhance trees and plants throughout the community since the early 1990s.
